Celebrating the Second Sundays of Summer

On Sunday, July 13, Long Beach Airport (LGB) handed out goodies while interacting with the community at Second Sundays in the Village. The free event is held every month of the summer in Virginia Village on Long Beach Blvd between 53rd and 56th streets. Many locals were drawn to the event, which featured a variety of entertainment and vendors.

The entertainment included dancers and musicians from the Cultural Alliance of Long Beach and an open mic, where children sang songs from their favorite television shows and the ever-popular movie Frozen. Fellow vendors included the Aquarium of the Pacific, Covered California, Long Beach Water, the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, Long Beach Beekeepers, and the Long Beach Human Trafficking Task Force.

Dancers showed everyone how it's done.
A sunny summer day made for a great event.

Volunteers were at the ready to answer questions.

LGB passed out TSA-approved travel kits, doggy bandanas, and doggy waste bag dispensers.

Be sure to attend the next Second Sunday on August 10!

Welcome Back, UCI Anteaters!

On Thursday, June 19, Long Beach Airport (LGB) had the privilege of welcoming UC Irvine’s baseball team home from the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

The Anteaters arrived on a charter flight provided by Southwest Airlines in the early afternoon. The team was returning home after their loss to the Longhorns from University of Texas at Austin.

Despite the team’s loss the night before, LGB staff members were out in full force to welcome the Anteaters with pom poms and goodies.

The team was welcomed by the colors of their alma mater.

Biking at the Beach: The 2014 Los Angeles River Ride

On Sunday, June 22, the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition (LACBC) hosted the 14th annual Los Angeles River Ride. The Los Angeles River Ride provides participants 10 different rides to choose from, ranging from a 100-mile ride to a 15-mile family ride. The event featured free food, music, and goodies provided by sponsors including LGB. LGB was on hand with chapstick, sunscreen, dog bandanas, and more.

Pilot Don Guichard and his wife, both avid bikers, came from Huntington Beach to enjoy the festivities. “Wherever your marriage is going, a tandem will take you there faster,” joked Guichard.

Grand Marshal Damian Kevitt and MC Dorothy Le pumped up participants and passersby. Taiwanese techno dancers and a bluegrass band provided opportunities for photos, singing, and dancing.
LACBC was founded in 1998 in order to build a more bikeable LA County.

Still Truck'n Along: Truck'n Tuesday Celebrates its Anniversary

On Tuesday, June 17, Long Beach Airport (LGB) celebrated the one year anniversary of its monthly foodie frenzy, Truck’n Tuesday. Held on the third Tuesday of each month in LGB’s Cell Phone Waiting Lot, Truck’n Tuesday features a variety of food trucks to satisty everyone’s appetite.

The one year anniversary event featured Mexican-Korean fusion fare from MexiCalbi, cheesy delights from The Grilled Cheese Truck, French treats from Crepes Bonaparte, and frozen desserts from Shave It. Truck’n Tuesday consistently draws passersby and employees from LGB, the city, and surrounding businesses. Local employees observed that the quality of the food and the convenience of the location are unbeatable.

Thomas Gratopp, Tera Hurff, and David Rubi, students from Cal State Long Beach, attended the event to complete a school assignment. “We’re observing how food truck events function as a leisure activity,” said Hurff. Gratopp and Rubi agreed that the food was delicious.

Be sure to join us at our next Truck’n Tuesday, July 15!
