Airport Operations, or more commonly referred to as "OPS" is a department within the airport tasked with coordinating the day to day operations of the airport. The responsibilities of a larger airport operations department are traditionally separated in to two job roles "landside" and "airside." This separation does exist for the Long Beach Airport (LGB) operations team, however they do switch between the two roles as needed. Air-side responsibilities can include taxiway/runway inspections, airfield patrol, clearing foreign object debris (FOD), and wildlife management. Land-side responsibilities can include facility inspections (including parking facilities), maintaining relationships with the airlines, maintenance coordination, and ensuring a smooth passenger flow in the terminal. Airport OPS is constantly working throughout the day to ensure that travelers have a seamless and safe experience at LGB.
This inspection requires her and her team to look at every taxiway, runway, and lighting system that LGB has on-site. The bulk of our shift with Janice was spent patrolling the airfield. On these patrols, Janice looks for anything out of the ordinary like a broken fence or animals on the airfield. OPS also looks for items such as broken or burned out lights, cracks and potholes in pavement, faded paint or signs, foreign object debris (FOD), and rubber buildup on the runway when they inspect the airfield. Occasionally, OPS will receive requests from the Tower to assist with items such as pilot reported FOD or a disabled aircraft (most often a tire that has gone flat). Each of these items is carefully logged, and if needed, reported to other airport departments such as engineering. Janice and her team complete their inspection before the opening of LGB's main runway each morning. During and after inspection, Janice is also on the lookout for any unexpected tall items on the horizon, such as construction cranes, that may have been placed overnight. If she finds something unexpected, a member of OPS is dispatched from the airfield to gather information about the site. OPS directs the site owner to file the proper paperwork with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) so pilots can be alerted to the potential hazard. After her morning inspections, Janice shifts her focus to the airport NOTAMs (Notice to Airmen) for the day. These NOTAMs inform pilots of irregular conditions at the airport such as construction, non-functional lighting, and potential hazards to the airport. Janice and her OPS team ensure that the published NOTAMs match the current conditions at the airport, and make changes as needed to ensure the safety of flights in and out of LGB. According to Janice, assisting a disabled aircraft requires quick thinking and often involves garnering assistance from one of the airports fixed base operators (FBOs) or maintenance companies. Throughout Janice's shift she is constantly monitoring both airport police radio, and air traffic control frequencies. This alerts her of anything happening at the field, and ensures quick response to any problems that may arise. While on the job, Janice is required to maintain contact with air traffic control (ATC). When her work requires her to enter a movement area, such as a taxiway or runway, she must contact ATC for permission. This enables ATC to keep her, and the airplanes on the field, safely separated. Janice shared her favorite part of her job is the ability to interact with the many components of aviation. This includes learning about the lesser-known areas of aviation like firefighting. Janice says this is a special perk of working at LGB, due to the unique variety of activity that occurs at the airport.

Job Responsibilities

Operations personnel are commonly called to perform a large variety of tasks, including a few that you may find surprising.

Assisting with wildlife management on airport grounds is one of the many responsibilities given to the OPS team. While you may not think of wildlife as a potential issue at LBG, animals on the field are somewhat common. Birds and larger animals like coyotes find their way on to airport grounds, putting both themselves and the aircrafts at risk. OPS personnel work closely with agencies such as the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), to monitor and relocate wildlife that may find its way onto the airfield.

Another responsibility of Operations is coordinating construction and repair efforts. OPS personnel are often the first to find items in need of repair on the airfield, but their jobs do not end there. A repair as simple as a pothole on a taxiway requires OPS to work with multiple airport departments to ensure the repair is made as quickly as possible. For such a repair, OPS will contact Airport Engineering to develop the best plan for repair, then they coordinate with Air Traffic Control (ATC) and airport tenants to close the taxiway so crews are able to work on the area. If the repair requires outside construction crews, OPS escorts these crews onto the field and ensure security standards are maintained. After the repair, OPS inspects the area; verifies it is free of debris and all lights, signs and paint markings in the area are still visible and functional. This process can become much more complex for large-scale construction projects.

The OPS department is also responsible for working with various government agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). As an airport that provides commercial service, LGB is required to maintain elevated standards of operations and facilities. The OPS team works closely with the FAA to ensure these standards are met, and to provide information and feedback that is useful for improving the national aerospace system. Similar data and feedback is provided to the NTSB who use the data to better understand general operations at airports. In addition, OPS is responsible for coordinating the response to an emergency on the airfield and determine which agencies need to be notified after the emergency has concluded.

Passenger flow management also falls within the responsibility of OPS. By working with entities such as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Airport Police, and airline staff, OPS helps to ensure that passengers are able to flow smoothly through the airport's facilities and their gates. This can become difficult when incidents such as car accidents and medical emergencies occur at the airport. If not handled properly, these situations can slow or stop the flow of cars or passengers through airport facilities, leading to missed flights and unhappy passengers.

The OPS department works tirelessly on both the airfield and terminal to ensure that you have a safe and smooth experience at LGB. The next time you fly out of LGB, be sure to give those white cars and their drivers a wave!
On June 17, 2019, Long Beach Airport unveiled a new monument
sign on the corner of Donald Douglas Drive and Lakewood Boulevard. The new sign
replaced an existing sign which stood at the entrance to LGB for over 30 years.
The Monument Sign was designed by artist Paul Wendling, who worked closely with
architect Mark Schoeman, Civic Construction Associates, and Absolute Sign Inc,
to bring this project to life. The sign measures 40 feet long and 10 feet high
(at its tallest point) and features the words "Long Beach Airport"
across the front. New LED lighting around the words of the sign create a halo
effect when illuminated at night.

Features such as the new lighting of the sign, and the planting of drought resistant plants, are expected to lower maintenance costs, when compared to the previous sign. The design was inspired by the wing of the infamous DC-3 as a tribute to the rich aviation history of Long Beach. Construction of the sign was accomplished by molding a fiberglass version of the wing in a wooden form and then overlaying the fiberglass wing with aluminum plating and rivets.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">20s - LGB’s founding dates back to 1923, when 150 acres near the intersection of Spring and Cherry was set aside for use as an airfield. It was named Daugherty Field after one of Long Beach’s pioneer aviators and became the first municipal airport to serve Southern California. However, it was not until 1928-30 that actual significant development of the airport began when the City built hangars and administrative facilities for the Navy and Army Corps.
In 1942, LGB achieved yet another milestone when it was declared number one in the U.S. for total airport operations. This era also saw the flight of the Spruce Goose, the first aircraft with a wingspan in excess of 300 feet. It was the largest flying boat ever built and made its one and only flight Nov. 2, 1947, in Long Beach.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Present - The final decade of our LGB blast to the past. This current decade has been a memorable one with lots of enhancements. In 2012, the official ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to celebrate the new concourse. In 2015, the award-winning mosaics in the historic terminal building were carefully restored after seven decades. Parking Structure A was renovated in 2017 and in 2018, Hawaiian Airlines began its first service from Long Beach to Honolulu. It offers quick and easy access for travelers to Hawaii in a new aircraft fleet, the Airbus A321neo. Also in 2018, LGB redesignated two-parallel runways after 66 years. Runway 7R-25L became 8R-26 and Runway 7L-25R became 8L-26R. The new designated runway was changed due to the shift in the earth’s magnetic field.

Long Beach Airport has plenty of gifts in store for travelers flying through LGB this holiday season. With festive decorations, local musical acts, and several new seasonal routes, the holiday spirit is alive and well at LGB!

<div style="font-family: "segoe ui", helvetica, "s60 sans", "bbalpha sans", droid, tahoma, arial; font-size: 16px; text-align: left;">

<div style="font-family: "segoe ui", helvetica, "s60 sans", "bbalpha sans", droid, tahoma, arial; font-size: 16px; text-align: center;">

Immediately entering the airport, visitors are greeted by an enormous gold bow sitting atop parking structure B. A giant Christmas tree accompanied by a Hanukah menorah and Kwanza table, as well as a large LGB95 sign to commemorate the airport’s 95th Anniversary, sit in the plaza behind the terminal area offering a great opportunity for photos. LGB encourages guests to share pictures on social media by using #MerryLGB and #LGB95.

<div style="direction: ltr; font-family: "Segoe UI", Helvetica, "S60 Sans", "BBAlpha Sans", Droid, Tahoma, Arial; font-size: 16px; margin-top: 5px;">

Additionally, LGB is partnering with local musicians and groups from area schools to perform holiday music for travelers and visitors at LGB. The Panjammas, a steel drums group from Cabrillo High School, the TSA chorus, and the Madrigals choir from Lakewood High School are among the acts that will help spread holiday cheer this season.

Just in time for the busy holiday travel period, JetBlue has announced two new popular ski destinations to Steamboat Springs, Colorado and Bozeman, Montana. These routes will appeal to ski enthusiasts and LGB’s outdoor minded passengers.

Lastly, as with any major holiday, traffic through the airport will be higher than usual. For a hassle-free trip, LGB recommends the following tips to all passengers:

The 13th Annual Special Olympics Plane Pull was held at Long
Beach Airport on August 18. Teams tested their strength and stamina to see who
can pull a FedEx airplane 12 feet the fastest. This year, over 200 participated
in the inaugural Fun Run/Inclusion Walk that started at Long Beach Exchange and
finished at the Plane Pull site. Special Olympics of Southern California (SOSC)
raised over $190,000 through both events. Proceeds will support people
with intellectual disabilities who train and compete in life-changing sports
programs. Long Beach Airport is proud to partner with SOSC in this worthwhile
endeavor.

Long Beach
Airport (LGB) is an economic asset and integral part of the city. Balancing the
benefits of the airport while respecting the neighborhoods in the surrounding
communities is one of LGB’s key goals. Long Beach Airport’s ‘Flying Neighborly’
program is a community partnership that strives to be responsive to noise
concerns and develop ways to keep pilots flying safely and responsibly. With the help
of community members and local helicopter pilots, eight videos were produced to
help educate individuals on how to minimize the impact of helicopter noise. Individuals that played a part in the production of the ‘Flying
Neighborly’ videos were recently recognized at the Airport Advisory Commission meeting. Long Beach Airport Director Jess Romo thanked the
individuals for their work with the 'Flying Neighborly' program. The educational helicopter videos are available on LGB's website. Flying Neighborly Videos

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After 66 years, Long Beach Airport (LGB) has redesignated two runways for the first time. The runways were redesignated to account for natural shifts in the earth’s magnetic field. Runway 7R-25L is now 8R-26L, and Runway 7L-25R is now 8L-26R. Runway numbers are based on magnetic headings, for example, the runways are known as 8-26 because they face 80 degrees on a compass in one direction and 260 degrees in the opposite direction. Since these are parallel runways at Long Beach Airport, they are marked appropriately as Left and Right. Pilots and air traffic controllers rely on navigational aids and flight procedures that are based on magnetic headings to find their takeoff and landing runways.

Recently, students in the Master of Supply Chain Management program at California State University Long Beach enjoyed a tour of the UPS facility. Now, this wasn’t your average sightseeing experience--students were given valuable insight into the operation of a hub-and-spoke network! When students arrived at the facility they were greeted by a long-time UPS employee. The knowledge and skill needed to operate a successful transportation center as part of one the world’s largest airlines is learned through years of experience. Several employees at this facility have worked for UPS for over 40 years.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">While touring the aircraft, their hosts briefed them on the importance of security and adherence to FAA regulatory guidelines. They shared insight into the complexities of the UPS operation, including: weight distribution, transporting hazardous material, and time sensitivity. Although this facility only has one flight a day, the work is continuous and the employees work diligently to meet their high standards. Special thanks to the UPS employees who were eager to share their experiences, and to CSULB professors Dr. Wade Martin and Dr. Tom O’Brien and Long Beach Airport Commissioner Phil Ramsdale for organizing this unique opportunity!

It is not uncommon to have Officer Wooldridge volunteer for
a special project or assignment. He is continually looking for ways to
make himself a more well-rounded employee. Late last year, Officer
Wooldridge accepted a Special Assignment in the access control office.
The need was sparked due to some major personnel changes within the Safety and
Security Division. Officer Wooldridge knew accepting this assignment
would dramatically change his work schedule, yet he did so without
hesitation. Officer Wooldridge found himself learning a host of new
systems and processes, while being expected to perform at a level in
which the Badging Office has become accustomed to. With his feet barely
wet, the Badging Office was forced to make the decision to perform a rebadge of
the entire SIDA population, with the Sterile Area and AOA on the horizon as
well. To assist the rebadge process go as smooth as possible, Officer
Wooldridge volunteered to come in between 0200 and 0300 (5-6 hours before the
office opened) to do nothing more than print badges so as to better prepare the
office for the day ahead. Officer Wooldridge also took on an unexpected
expense in the form of child care, allowing him to be as fully available as
possible.

For the United States to emerge victorious as it did, it required involvement from all corners of the nation. Long Beach Airport (LGB), known then as Daugherty Field, was a key contributor as it was home to airfields operated by the U.S. military as well as the Douglas Aircraft manufacturing plant. These accommodations allowed the airport to play a crucial role in the war effort.

Daugherty Field was home to both the Army and Navy during WWII

Long Beach Airport was geographically strategic during WWII due to its proximity to the coast. Expanded to 500 acres prior to the war, the airfield was given to the military after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Naval Auxiliary Air Station (NAAS) at the airport was committed to servicing carrier borne aircraft as well as patrol planes. Meanwhile, the Army Air Corps occupied the remaining aviation facilities and established a training base.

Among the pilots stationed in Long Beach was aviation icon Barbara London. The only woman in WWII to be awarded the distinguished Air Medal, London was stationed at the Long Beach Army Airfield and commanded a squadron of 18 woman pilots under the Army’s Air Transport Command Ferrying Division.

The war saw immense manufacturing take place at Long Beach Airport. Meeting President Roosevelt’s earlier call for the U.S. to be the “Arsenal of Democracy,” the Douglas Aircraft facility got to work almost immediately after Pearl Harbor. It would go on to deliver 4300 C-47’s, building one every three hours, in addition to 2200 A-20’s and A-26’s as well as 3000 B-17’s.

This wartime production was not possible without the involvement of women. Rosie the Riveter was a considerable presence at Douglas, where women made up 50 percent of the workforce. They proved women were more than capable of working outside the home, an idea previously implausible in American culture.

Barbara London joined the Air Force Reserve following the war

Long Beach Airport returned to its commercial functions following the war. However, the wartime operations would leave its impact. Barbara London would go on to become a Major in the U.S. Air Force, continuing to inspire women to pursue aviation. The site adjacent to the former Douglas plant is now Rosie the Riveter Park, named in honor of the women who worked there. As for the airport itself, it remains a manufacturing and development site for various aircraft companies.Long Beach Airporthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06813476039506793588noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2557938464551564821.post-78576093791556055712017-07-31T13:00:00.000-07:002017-08-03T09:26:23.991-07:00Cosmic Girl Homecoming Flight

For February 2017, Long Beach Airport would like to recognize an employee who has gone above and beyond his day-to-day duties. Welton Trang began working at Long Beach Airport (LGB) in a non-career role in 2014 and is now a valuable full-time employee in the Operations department.

He is currently putting his IT and computer skills to use as he develops the airport’s SharePoint website; the project began as an Operations-only page, but after interest from others, the project became multi-departmental and Trang is happy to take on the challenge. Trang has also played a key role in multiple incidents involving disabled aircraft, helping to move the aircraft off of the runway so that commercial service and general aviation could resume.

Trang puts his skills to use to help everyone he meets. From supporting the Airport’s Employee Recognition Committee (ERC) at food fundraisers to putting his photography skills to use for the Public Affairs department, he has consistently gone above and beyond to help other employees. Most recently, he created a slideshow highlighting the ERC’s 2016 Holiday Party.
Formerly known as the Fly-In, the biggest event of its kind in the Long Beach area brought together families and people of all ages. The Festival’s Veteran’s Day theme was made evident during the opening ceremonies; members of the military presented the colors, the National Anthem was performed, and speakers including Councilwoman Stacy Mungo, Airport Director Jess L. Romo, and Commander Chuck Street led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Static aircraft displays included WWII-era warbirds, a Gulfstream Jet, a Citation Mustang, and a Catalina Flying Boat DC-3. With a line spanning nearly half of the event space, the most popular aircraft at the event proved to be the Orbis DC-10. This aircraft was the second DC-10 produced by McDonnell Douglas in Long Beach and was later converted into an ophthalmic hospital and teaching facility to serve developing countries. After the event, the DC-10 was set to take its final flight to the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson for retirement and public display.
Away from the airfield, fun for the whole family was plentiful with live music provided by Rock for Vets, a musical rehabilitation program for at-risk youth and veterans, and food and drink provided by vendors such as The Hungry Nomad, Belly Bombz, Roxanne’s Cocktail Lounge, and Legends Sports Bar. Children were treated to jumpers, assisted rock climbing, and face painting. Airport and City vehicles comprised an interactive Touch-A-Truck display and a car show was put on by Honoring our Fallen, an organization that supports our nation’s fallen heroes and their families. Vendors present included the Toyota Grand Prix, Eagle Scouts, TSA, a local independent chocolate company, and a bilingual education program.
efficient, quiet, and clean engines available. The B737 Max is likely
to be one of the last “tube and wing” designs because the need for greater
efficiency, less noise, and lower emissions is driving the move to a blended
wing design for commercial aircraft.

An important factor in integrating a new aircraft into a commercial fleet is ensuring that it can
meet noise regulations, as people are living closer to airports than ever
before. The 737 MAX was designed to be 40 percent quieter than Boeing’s
Next-Generation 737. After conducting preliminary tests, Keith Leverkuhn, vice
president and general manager of the 737 MAX program, remarked that “the MAX
noise levels are right where we want them to be.”
